Governance and policy for a just and sustainable energy transition: International Seminar

An intensive 3-day PhD course and 2-day seminar bringing together researchers to support a just and sustainable energy transition in the Nordic region.

The Nordic region is a global leader in energy transition efforts, combining ambitious climate policies, technological innovation, and a strong tradition of social welfare. However, the path toward sustainable and just energy systems varies across national contexts, presenting both shared challenges and unique insights. A new generation of early-career researchers is exploring these issues through interdisciplinary and applied approaches, yet opportunities for structured exchange and long-term collaboration across borders remain limited. Ensuring a just and environmentally sustainable energy transition requires the experience and expertise of different fields with different backgrounds to share knowledge, ideas and develop cross-disciplinary solutions.

At the University of Helsinki, an intensive 3-day PhD-level course on “Governance and policy for a just and sustainable energy transition” that provided a platform to explore energy topics in depth. Additionally, a two-day seminar was held at the centre campus of the University of Helsinki that invited researchers from other Nordic countries and beyond to discuss and present their research on energy transitions. The initiative offered a space for scholarly dialogue, methodological exchange, and network-building. It will also lay the foundation for future joint activities through sharing of ideas, cross-disciplinary collaboration and networking. Unlike traditional conferences, the seminar was purposefully small-scale and participatory, enabling deeper conversations and interdisciplinary collaboration.
